Your weight can affect your health. Being overweight increases your risk of developing health problems, such as high blood pressure and high blood cholesterol, both major risk factors in heart attack and stroke. Being overweight is also associated with other serious diseases such as diabetes.
Fat around the stomach is a particularly high-risk factor in heart and blood vessel disease. The key to achieving and maintaining a healthy weight is regular physical activity and healthy low-fat eating. Successful weight loss takes time, so if you're overweight, you may need to allow 6-12 months to reach a weight you're comfortable with.
There is no such thing as a single ideal weight for any height, but rather there is a healthy weight range that is based on a Body Mass Index (BMI). The BMI relates your weight to your height to identify a healthy body mass index. This makes sense as taller people should, on average, weigh more than shorter people - and vice versa. Of course, the appropriate body mass formula may be slightly different for some people with special conditions who may not "fit" into the standard.
How to calculate your BMI
The formula to calculate your BMI is: BMI = weight (kg) divided by height (m)2
For example:
• if you are over eighteen and
• you weighed 70kg, and
• you were 172cm (1.72m) high, then
your Body Mass Index would be = 70 / (1.72*1.72) or 24.2bmi
The BMI is a measure of body fat in adults. Studies have shown that men and women over the age of 18 years, with a BMI measure between 20 and 25, have the least risk of disease and a longer healthier life. You can work out your own BMI by dividing your weight (in kilograms) by your height (in metres) squared.
Usually women should have a BMI towards 20 and men towards 25. That is:- a good BMI is somewhere between 20 and 25. If your BMI is above this range you are over weight. If your BMI is below this range you are underweight. So to work out the weight at which your BMI would fall into the normal persons' healthy range use this formula or, let us do it for you below: Formula - the normal healthy weight for someone my height is between 20 times (my height in metres)2 and 25 times (my height in metres)2 or using the above example 20*1.72*1.722 and 25*1.72*1.72 that would be between 59kg and 74kg Or enter your height and current weight below and we will tell you your BMI and the range you should fall within.
